We have taken our kids on nature hikes with us since they have been babies. Both my husband and I enjoy being out in nature, taking pictures, and relaxing.

Corkscrew Swamp

Our nature outings have changed a bit since we had kids. They seem to not be as long and we take quite a bit more stops (and we have to bring more stuff). But they are still just as enjoyable.

My kids are learning to enjoy God’s creation and point out the little things. Yes, I take the time to notice the ant pile on the ground and the weeds that caught their eye.

The best ways to help your child connect with nature more can start with:

  1. Getting down on their level. Stop to see the little things that are important to them. The ants, the bug that just flew by, the weeds, the clouds, and what shapes they see
  2. Taking a picture of what you are looking at so they can see it and match it up
  3. Giving them a task like a scavenger hunt or play I Spy!
  4. Bringing binoculars, even if it’s just the paper towel kind
  5. Bringing plenty of snacks and water
  6. Stopping along the way to draw, color, paint, etc
  7. Allowing them to bring their own cameras. Fisher-price has a good one for the younger kids. It’s so nice that nowadays it is digital so your kid can snap a thousand pictures and you may get one that is halfway decent and then delete the others.
  8. Taking it slow. Remember, not only are their feet smaller than yours, but they are more curious and want to know about every detail so they enjoy looking at the small things more. Remember that you don’t have to go very far for your child to spot nature and enjoy it
  9. Dressing appropriately. If you are going to be out in the woods, it is best to have on long sleeves and pants. No, this doesn’t have to be warm clothes if it is in the middle of summer. They make lightweight long sleeve shirts and pants that offer protection from the sun, bugs, and other elements without all the extra fabric and weight
  10. Last but certainly not least: HAVE FUN and enjoy the time you have together!

Please leave a comment if you enjoyed the activities. I would love to see what you and your children did on your nature walks.
